The Magpie Cafe

For excellent Fish and Chips, this is the place to dine. Rick Stein visited this little gem and even he thought it was rather special, (the beer is good too).

Blakey Ridge

We spent the night here on 1st March 2005. The snow was so deep we couldn't see out of our ground floor bedroom window. The food was excellent, the choice of beer quite superb, but the feeling of being trapped on the moors for the night, in such a pleasant traditional Inn was the best bit.

Enjoy a meal and drink overlooking the harbour.

Captain James Cook

Click on the picture to learn a little about our most famous explorer.

Sitting on a bench on the East Cliff, next to St Mary's Church, looking out over the West Side, I explained to my eight year old daughter, (1996), that the statue opposite was in memory of James Cook, the most famous of all navigators and explorers. This was two days after a visit to the James Cook Museum in Stewart Park in Middlesbrough, with which she was totally unimpressed. I couldn't understand why she should be so disinterested. We walked over to the West Cliff to see the statue. Looking up she said:

"That's not Captain Kirk"
